Boys tennis: Wolves advance after first day of league tourney

So far, so good for Sequim’s tennis players. Now, if only the weather would cooperate.

SHS singles players Garrett Little and Connor Bear are 2-0 and into the semifinals while doubles partners Henry Hughes and Jack Van De Wege are 2-1 and into the consolation quarterfinals after the first day of the Olympic League tournament in Poulsbo on Oct. 19.

Poor weather has thwarted play since, and the league looks to finish the two-day tourney as early as Oct. 27, as players vie for seeds to the West Central District tournament.

Little, still undefeated on the 2021 season, opened the tourney with a 6-1, 6-0 win over North Kitsap’s Alex Kenney before routing NK’s Indigo Gallagher-Zapf, 6-1 and 6-1. In the tourney semifinals, he’ll face Sequim teammate Connor Bear.

Bear also beat a pair of North Kitsap players (John Sugimoto and Andrew Myers) to advance to the semis.

Sequim’s Koda Robinson went 1-2 in singles play, earning a 6-3, 6-4 win over Olympic’s Xavier Skillings before falling to NK’s Myers in three sets (6-3, 6-7, 6-3).

In doubles play, Sequim’s Hughes and Van De Wege opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over a North Kitsap squad, but fell 6-1, 6-3 to NK’s Carl Burchill and Ethan Gillespie in the quarterfinals. The Sequim duo rebounded with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the consolation bracket over SHS teammates Kaiden Jones and Espn Judd. The duo will need a pair of wins to advance to the consolation final and assure themselves a spot at districts.

Sequim’s Jones and Judd went 1-2 in the doubles bracket, as did Sequim duo Adrian Brown and William Hughes.

North Kitsap dominated the doubles bracket, placing three of their four team entries in the semifinals.

The top four singles players and doubles teams move on to the district tournament, set for Oct. 29-30 at the Bremerton Tennis Center.

The state 2A boys tennis tournament aligns with the girls’ season in May, and is set for May 27-28 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
