College basketball: Pirate women win, men fall in conference openers

Peninsula College’s women Pirates, who fell out of the Alaska Airlines Coaches Poll following the West Region Crossover Tournament, responded with a big win in their North Division opener Saturday, Jan. 10, stopping the Edmonds Tritons 108-45 in one of the more lopsided games in the program’s history.

In a game that saw all 13 players see action, the P.C. women (1-0 in conference, 7-4 overall) overwhelmed the visitors from the opening tip. The Pirates bolted out to a 17-2 lead. increased that advantage to 32-5 minutes later and held a 54-22 lead by halftime.

Cierra Moss came off the bench to score 27 points to lead all scorers. Madison Pilster hit for 20, Miranda Schmillen scored 13 and Imani Smith added 11. Gabi Fenumiai contributed eight points and 12 rebounds.

The Pirates, who improved to 7-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, travel to Whatcom (0-1, 5-9) at Meridian High School in Bellingham on Jan. 14.

 

Men lose by 10

In Saturday’s nightcap, the Pirate were unable to repeat their win against Edmonds in the championship game of the West Region Crossover Tournament back on Dec. 21.

Zach Pederson led No. 2-ranked Edmonds with 20 points as they topped the host Peninsula squad, 64-54.

After hitting for 21 points against the tritons earlier this season, Pirate sharp-shooter Ryley Callaghan was unable to shake Edmonds defenders and was held to just four points, all of them at the free throw line. Callaghan was 0-for-8 from the field.

The Pirate men (0-1 in conference, 7-6 overall) trailed 35-21 at halftime but pulling to within one at 53-52 with 2:41 to play.

Deonte Dixon, P.C.’s leading scorer, fouled out soon after, however; Dixon finished with 18 points. Jeremiah Hobbs finished with 11 points and eight rebounds and Jal Deng also had 11 points.

The Pirates will take on defending North Division champion Whatcom (0-1, 2-10) at Meridian High School in Bellingham on Jan. 14.
