College soccer: PC women sweep, men split at Starfire matches

If Peninsula’s women wanted an early-season test or two, they certainly got it.

The Pirates won a pair of matches against 2016 division champions last week at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.

On Aug. 24, PC upended 2016 South Region champion Clark 3-1, getting a pair of second-half scores from Sydney Warren.

PC freshman midfielder Brianna Duran opened the scoring at 10 minutes off a feed from Malia Brudvik.

Clark tied it at 42 minutes when Maddison Maffeo scored an unassisted goal.

It stayed tied until the 80-minute mark when Warren, who came back onto the field after a breather, pushed Peninsula ahead on a score with 10 minutes left from Jayna Morikawa.

Warren added an insurance goal five minutes later, with the assist going to Sara Reiber.

PC out-shot Clark 14-4 and didn’t give up a corner kick all game.

The Pirates got — and passed — a bigger test a day later against Spokane, the East Region champions and NWAC tourney quarter-finalists in 2016.

Peninsula jumped out to a three-goal lead by halftime and held on for a 4-3 victory.

Sophomore defender Samatha Guzman got things rolling with a goal at the seven-minute mark off a Jordyn DiCintio feed. Peninsula made it 2-0 when Kelly Kevershan notched an unassisted goal.

Spokane closed the gap at 25 minutes with a score but Brudvik put PC back ahead by two scores with an unassisted goal at 33 minutes.

Janis Martinez-Ortiz added a fourth PC goal just before halftime.

Jamie Fassler and Sabrina Castaneda added second-half goals for the Sasquatch but were unable to knot the game.

Peninsula out-shot Spokane 26-11.

The PC women hosted Tacoma on Aug. 29 — results were not available at press time. They join the Peninsula men for a double-header at Pierce on Sept. 5.

Pirate men gain split

Seeking a return to the top of the North Region, Peninsula’s men went 1-1 in Tukwila last week against a pair of strong opponents.

On Aug. 24, PC overcame deficits twice to knock off defending NWAC champion Tacoma 4-2.

After Saidi Myenyeheri put Tacoma up 1-0 at the 12-minute mark, Adrian Benitez found Cesar Gervacio for a score 10 minutes later and the teams went to halftime tied at 1-1.

Tacoma’s Zach Ecklund scored in the second half’s opening minute, but Sterling Penniston-John and Juan Carrillo scored at 52 and 78 minutes, respectively.

With about two minutes left and nursing a 3-2 lead, Benitez earned his third assist of the game and found Gervacio for PC’s fourth goal.

Peninsula out-shot Tacoma 12-9 but needed to make seven saves for the win.

On Aug. 25, the Pirates fell to 2016 NWAC runner-up Spokane, 3-1.

Spokane’s Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez and Peninsula’s Manuel Galiano each had a goal in the 15th minute for the first half’s lone scores, but the Sasquatch got second-half goals from Arturo Bahena and Ian Schimandle for the victory.

Spokane out-shot PC, 13-8.

The Pirates play their first regular home match of the season Sept. 13 against Everett, with the women playing at 2 p.m. and men at 4 p.m.
