Men’s Soccer
Peninsula College’s men’s soccer squad dominated Columbia Basin for 75 of their 90 minutes of play Wednesday, routing the Hawks in Port Angeles, 4-2.
Keevan Webb broke open the scoring in the first minute and Ash Apollon and Alex Martinez added a score and an assist each in the P.C. victory.
Kalei Gallarde also had a score for Peninsula (4-0-1).
"For the first half we looked very good," P.C. head coach Andrew Chapman said. "(We) moved the ball well and got a lot of chances. Would have been nice to hold our shutout but in the end it was about playing time and working on different things."
Columbia Basin got late goals from Ivan Balbuena and Jesse Esquivel III in the 76th and 89th minute, respectively.
Peninsula outshot Columbia Basin, 17-8. P.C. keeper Angel Guerra had three saves.
The Pirates are back in action at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, against the Victoria Highlanders’ reserve squad.
Women’s Soccer
Peninsula College, the nation’s 12th-ranked junior college women’s soccer team, opened conference play with a 3-1 win over the Titans at Lane Community College on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Pirate sophomore Bri Afoa, the 2012 NWAACC Baden Player of the Year, scored the first goal of the season for the Pirates just 15 minutes into the match, beating two Titan defenders off the dribble and then booting it past the keeper Samantha Schoene.
The Pirates made it 2-0 on a score by freshman Katelyn Raatz of Sparks, Nev., from about 30 yards out. lyssa Bertuleit, also of Sparks, assisted on the goal.
The hosts got on the scoreboard on a long-range bomb by Maddi Barton, but the Pirates would not let them back in the match, tallying an insurance goal in the 70th minute. Sophomore team captain Annie Armstrong of Olympia provided the match’s final tally of an Afoa assist.
“We were creative in the attack and we played tough defensively,” Peninsula coach Kanyon Anderson said. “We played well enough to win and to feel good about it, but we know we need to improve.”
Emily Flinn of Forest Grove, Ore., and Kasie Lough of Roy, Wa., split time in the keeper position for the Pirates.
Lane’s keeper Shoene was peppered by the Pirate front line and midfield, finishing the day with 15 saves.
