In a battle between Olympic and Metro League teams, Sequim’s top racers held their own.
SHS senior Murray Bingham finished second out of 171 boys runners at a combined Metro League/Olympic League race at Battle Point Park on Bainbridge Island on Sept. 26, finishing the 5,000-meter course in 16:49 — about 13 seconds behind meet champ Stefans Lusis of Kingston.
The Wolves’ boys finished tied for fourth with Kingston (109 points) in the seven-team boys race. Liam Byrne added a top-20 finish in 17th (17:57.6) and Alec Shingleton was 26th (18:38.2) for Sequim.
In the girls race, Sequim High freshman Riley Pyeatt was fifth for the Wolves, posting the second-fastest time for a ninth-grader (20:01.5) and beating Madison Zosa of North Kitsap — last year’s Olympic League champ and fifth-fastest runner at state — by two seconds.
Sequim hosts Olympic and Port Townsend in the Wolves’ lone home meet of the season at Robin Hill County Park on Oct. 3.
The Wolves are at Bremerton Oct. 10 to take on North Mason and the host Knights.
Sequim competes at the Olympic League championship on Thursday, Oct. 18, in Port Townsend, with top finishers moving on to the Westside Classic district meet set for Oct. 27 in University Place.
The state 2A meet is Nov. 3 in Pasco.
