Cross Country: Home course helps keep SHS boys on top

Some hearty hills never hurt anyone nor the Wolves chances of running past their opponents.

Mikey Cobb (16:27.4), Brendon Despain (16:27.7) and Peter Ohnstad (16:33) took the top three spots at Robin Hill Park on Sept. 25, which head coach Harold Huff said is to be expected.

“I think it can be said those three are going to run that close all season,” Huff said. “I can see any one of them winning any day.”

Sequim boys outran Kingston and Klahowya with its deep core of varsity and junior varsity team.

Four runners made significant strides over their times last year. Ohnstad improved by 38 seconds, Chris Jeffko more than a minute faster, Jackson Oliver by 51 seconds and girls No. 4 runner Alexis Cromer by nearly two minutes.

“Anytime you run your own course, you have an advantage,” Huff said. “There are those are two booger hills that gives us even more of an advantage.”

Erin Vig (22:23) took the fifth spot in the girls race and the top spot for the Wolves.

Huff said it’s likely she’ll pace the team for the season.

“She’s new enough to this that if she sticks with it, she’s going to run some sweet times,” he said.

Elizabeth Rosales (23:48.3) and Siana Turner (23:48.6) ran together taking the team’s second and third spots.

“Siana is in her third year and Elizabeth is running there with her,” Huff said. “Alexis (Cromer, 24:58) had a good race, too. She did a good summer workout. Chris Jeffko did the same thing.”

Going forward

Due to construction in Port Angeles’ Lincoln Park, the Wolves travel to Port Townsend’s Discovery Bay Golf Course today, Oct. 2, to take on Port Townsend and Port Angeles.

Huff said it’s a new course for everyone and Port Townsend might not have even run it yet.

Following the Sequim race, Huff said the next step for the boys is the four through eight runners, Jeffko, Christian Ash, C.J. Daniels, Jackson Oliver and Dylan Chatters closing the gap between them and the top three.

“If we can get the fourth and fifth guys closer by 30 seconds, that makes us real tough,” he said. “That and staying healthy.”

Top runner Cobb has an injury and might not race this week, Huff said.

He also was impressed how deep the team is with the top three junior varsity runners Oscar Herrera and August O’Shea taking the top two spots.

For the girls, he said it’s a matter of training harder.

“You train better if you do the hard workouts extra hard and at least do the easy workouts,” he said. They just need more miles under them and to stick with it.”
