The Wolfpack is headed to state.
Sequim’s girls cross country team, along with SHS senior Owen Randall, are headed east this week to the state 2A meet after earning qualifying scores and times at the West Central District meet at University Place on Oct. 29.
SHS junior Kaitlyn Bloomenrader raced to a sixth place finish in 20:42, helping the Wolves earn a fifth place finish at districts and qualify the team for the prep final.
Sequim sophomore Liberty Mavy (21:11) and sister Sadie (23:27), a junior, placed 16th and 43rd, respectively, backed by freshman teammate Ahrya Klinger (48th, 23:47) and sophomore teammates Aspen Goldner (89th, 26:22) and Nikoline Updike (90th, 26:32).
Randall placed 19th overall in 17:27, about 13 seconds off his personal best, to earn a state berth. It’s a 95-second improvement on his district time on the same course (Chambers Creek Properties) in 2021.
Freshman teammate Colin Feik was 41st in 18:07, about 21 seconds off a state qualifying time.
Sequim’s other district competitors included senior Calem Klinger (57th, 18:33), and sophomores Sean Southard (80th, 19:13) and James Mason (100th, 19:47).
Despite not technically qualifying as a team, Sequim’s boys put five runners into districts and placed 11th as a squad out of 17 schools with at least five runners, outpacing Lindbergh, Orting, Foster, Fife Sammamish and Evergreen (Seattle).
Port Angeles’ boys placed fourth, led by district champ Jack Gladfelter (15:38) and fifth place Max Baeder (16:13); both are seniors.
PA freshman Leia Larson was the lone Rider to qualify for state in the girls’ district race, finishing the 5,000-meter course in 21:19 to place 18th.
Kingston won the boys’ district team title, while White River won the girls’ crown.
The state 2A meet is set for Saturday, Nov. 5, at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
It will be a return trip to state for Sequim’s Bloomenrader, who placed 20th at last year’s meet with a 20:01 finish.
