Ellefson swims to school record, state berths

Talk about peaking at the right time.

Sequim High sophomore Colby Ellefson trimmed times in both of his preliminary events at the Sea-King boys district swimming meet last week, then bettered those — including a school record — to earn state 2A meet berths in both 200- and 500-yard freestyle events.

Ellefson, who practiced and competed with Port Angeles’ team in the regular season but represents Sequim in the postseason, swam to a sixth-place finish in the 500 free with a 5:24.73 finish.

He broke the Sequim High 500 free mark set by Kaleb Needoba three years ago.

Ellefson’s B Final time in the 200 free of 1:58.27 — 70 seconds faster than his preliminary race mark — earned him an eighth place finish and a second state meet allocation.

Thanks to Ellefson’s efforts, Sequim placed 14th out of 18 teams at the district meet.

Ellefson joins Port Angeles’ state qualifiers at the 1A/2A state swim and dive championships, set for Feb. 17-19 at the King Country Aquatic Center in Federal Way. The Roughriders placed fourth as a team at districts.
