Sequim’s fastpitch squad remains in the thick of the playoff race, scoring a big win against North Mason last week sandwiched between a pair of tough, close losses to teams the Wolves are battling for a district tourney berth.

The Wolves (4-3 in Olympic League, 4-8 overall) opened the week with a near-upset of league-leading Port Angeles, taking a 4-2 lead into the fifth inning before falling 7-5 on April 16.

Battling both the Roughriders and bad weather, Sequim pitcher Isabelle Dennis tossed a complete game giving up just six hits to a high-powered offensive team that came in averaging more than 12 runs a game. Dennis also had two hits, including a home run, and she scored three runs. Teammates Bobbi Sparks and Brianna Dominguez each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

With a win, the Wolves would have snapped the Roughriders’ 40-game league winning streak. The Roughriders rallied with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to keep their league streak alive; their last league loss was an 8-5 loss to Sequim in 2014.

Hope O’Connor paced Port Angeles with a double and two RBIs. She also pitched the final three innings, giving up two runs while striking out five to pick up the victory.

The Wolves rebounded with a 14-3 rout of North Mason on April 18. The Bulldogs got on the board in the first with a run but the Wolves tied it up quickly with a Jayla Julmist RBI triple.

Sequim erupted with seven runs on six hits in the second inning. North Mason closed the gap to 8-3 with a pair of runs in the third inning, but Sequim added six runs in the fourth inning with hits from Dennis, Dominguez, Shelby Jones, Latisha Robideau, Jessie Dominguez and Greta Christiansen.

Jones picked up the win on the mound, allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out five.

Sequim ended the week dropping a 5-3 decision at North Kitsap on April 20, dropping then a half-game behind the Vikings.

North Kitsap jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a walk and two hits. Sequim responded with two runs in the third; following a hit-by-pitch, the Wolves strung together consecutive hits by Dennis, Julmist and Bobbi Sparks for a 2-1 lead. Sequim added a third run in the sixth with an RBI hit from Dennis to score Dominguez.

The Vikings, however, had the answer in the bottom of the inning, plating four runs all with two outs.

Dennis finished 3-for-4 while Dominguez, Julmist and Sparks had two hits each.
