Sequim’s Wolves basketball teams are in action this week, seeking to further their seasons by advancing to regionals. Sequim’s girls take on top-seeded White River in the West Central District quarterfinals on Feb. 13 while Sequim’s boys are slated to play the loser of the Feb. 13 Fife/Port Angeles in a loser-out district game on Feb. 14. Before the snow created mayhem around the Puget Sound, Sequim’s girls basketball squad made a bit of mayhem on the hardcourt.

The Wolves out-scored Lindbergh 16-1 in the opening quarter to set the tone for a 47-28 win in the opener of the West Central District tournament on Feb. 7.

Kalli Wiker scored 11 points and Jessica Dietzman added nine to pace a balanced Sequim attack.

“We struggled to get into an offensive flow this game, but defensively, we were focused on what was needed to win,” Sequim coach Linsay Rapelje said.

“We had great help defense by Hope Glasser and Jayla Julmist, and Jessica Dietzman, Abby Schroeder and Bobbi Sparks played amazing defense on their best players.”

Elle Watts led Lindbergh with nine points.

The win gave advanced Sequim (14-6) to the district quarterfinals where they are slated to play district top seed White River (21-2) on Feb. 13. The Hornets had a first round bye.

The Wolves can lock up a berth in the regional round of the class 2A state tourney with a win; a loss means the Wolves would need two more wins to get to regionals, starting with Eatonville (11-13) on Feb. 14 and a win the next day against either Kingston, Fife or North Kitsap.

Sequim hasn’t advanced to the state tournament since the 2006-2007 season.
