Girls basketball: Wolves pick up wins, stay unbeaten in league

Sequim’s Wolves picked up three key wins last week to stay unbeaten in league play (11-0, 15-2 overall) heading into a big showdown set for Thursday, Feb. 3, against rival Port Angeles.

Wolves rout Bulldogs

Everyone on the roster contributed in Sequim’s 67-20 Olympic League win over North Mason’s Bulldogs on Jan. 25.

Hannah Bates led Sequim with 17 points, five rebounds, four steals and an assist.

“(She) shot the ball well tonight and we played good team defense,” SHS coach Joclin Julmist said.

Jolene Vaara also contributed with 11 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.

“Jolene did a great job leading on the defensive side and did a great job rebounding,” Julmist said.

Jelissa Julmist added 13 points, five boards and an assist, steal and block.

“Jelissa did a good job of playing through contact and playing defense,” Joclin Julmist said.

Sequim soars past Eagles

Three days later, Sequim controlled the game inside to dispatch Class 1A Klahowya in a non-league road game, 64-47.

“The girls played one of the best games of the season so far,” Joclin Julmist said. “The defense was good for most of the game and we kept our turnovers down.”

Vaara and Jelissa Julmist combined for 40 points and grabbed 26 rebounds between them, 13 each. Vaara totaled 24 points, seven steals, four assists and three blocked shots. Bates added 12 points, three assists and two steals.

“Klahowya had a perfect atmosphere, they had the band and the gym was packed with their fans,” Julmist said.

SHS bests Bucs

Sequim added a 63-47 win at Kingston on Jan. 29, as Vaara led the team with 30 points and seven rebounds.

“Jolene had another monster game on both sides of the court,” Joclin Julmist said. “She guarded (Kingston’s) best player the whole game and scored 30 points. She’s been really good all year.

He added, “We had a tough game tonight and needed a team effort to pull out this victory. The girls played good defense, helped each other out and made their players take difficult shots,.”

Hannah Wagner scored 12 points and had six assists and played strong defense, according to Julmist. Lauryn Stephens scored 11.

Bates didn’t score, but had four assists and four steals.

“She took two charges and should have had another one,” Julmist said. “She does all the little things that don’t always show up in the books. Good team win.”

The Wolves were slated to host Olympic in their final regular season home game on Feb. 1 — results were not available at press time.
