Girls basketball: Wolves stay unbeaten with wins over Bulldogs, Seahawks

Sequim’s Wolves got a bit of everything last week, from a postponement to a blowout win to a grind-it-out victory.

After seeing their Dec. 13 Olympic League match-up with North Kitsap postponed (it was scheduled to be made up Dec. 19) because of illnesses, Sequim hosted — and routed — the visiting North Mason Bulldogs on Dec. 15.

Sequim raced to a 29-2 lead after one quarter and 36-6 lead by halftime before settling into a 53-27 win.

Jolene Vaara led the team with 17 points and added four rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.

Hannah Bates had three 3-pointers for nine points, Dani Herman chipped in six points and seven rebounds, and Libby Turella added seven points and seven rebounds.

Sammie Bacon tallied a team-high eight rebounds and Jelissa Julmist tallied six points, four rebounds and three assists.

“The girls played really good defense in the first quarter and shot the ball very well, giving [us] a big lead,” SHS coach Joclin Julmist said.

On Dec. 17, Sequim kept its unbeaten streak to open the season with a 49-36 non-league win over the visiting Anacortes’ Seahawks.

Vaara had 19 points, five rebounds, five steals and three blocks, and Bacon nearly had a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds — including seven on the offensive glass.

“Sammie played great today,” Joclin Julmist said.

“We didn’t play our best game, but the girls played very good defense,” he said. “Jolene led the way in points, but Hannah, Taryn (Johnson) and Bobbi (Mixon) did a great job handling their full court press.”

Jelissa Julmist had seven points, six rebounds and a team-high six assists; Bates added five to go with eight points.

“Jelissa did a great job passing the ball and playing defense,” Joclin Julmist said.

Road win at NK

Sequim’s girls hoops squad used a strong second half surge to break a virtual halftime deadlock and come away with a 53-43 win at North Kitsap on Dec. 19, to go into the winter break with an unblemished record (4-0 in Olympic League, 7-0 overall).

“The girls worked hard to get this win tonight,” SHS head coach Joclin Julmist said.

Vaara had 17 points and three blocked shots, while Bates sank four 3-points and finished with 13 points and team highs in assists (seven) and steals (five).

“Hannah was amazing tonight; she made some big baskets,” Julmist said.

Jelissa Julmist had 12 points and a team-best nine rebounds.

Johnson was solid on both sides of the court, racking up nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.

“Taryn had her best game of the season tonight,” Joclin Julmist said. “She was everywhere. She rebounded played great defense and made some timely baskets.”

He credited Mixon for timely second half defense and Bacon for a spark off the bench.
