Girls basketball: Wolves top Bulldogs, Bucs to stay undefeated

Two more league games, two more routs.

Sequim’s girls basketball squad stayed unbeaten with a pair of impressive wins last week, improving to 12-0 in Olympic League play and 16-0 overall heading into this week’s games.

The Wolves, who were scheduled to play against an over-matched Olympic squad on the road on Jan. 31, host the 19th-ranked Port Angeles Roughriders in a girls-boys varsity doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 2.

Sequim, ranked No. 2 in the state 2A rankings by RPI, closes the regular season with a non-league game against Neah Bay, the No. 1-ranked 1B team in the state, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The Wolves edged Neah Bay 60-52 on Dec. 5. to open the season.

Bulldogs no match for Wolves

Sequim was missing one of its key players, but her teammates picked up the slack big time in a 68-45 road win at North Mason on Jan. 24.

Jolene Vaara was 12-of-17 from the field and finished with 25 points, and Hannah Bates scored 10, dished out 13 assists and had six steals in helping the Wolves earn a season sweep of the Bulldogs.

“Jolene shot the ball very well tonight and played a solid all around game,” SHS coach Joclin Julmist said.

Bobbi Mixon erupted for 14 points in the third quarter, when Sequim turned an 11-point lead into a blowout by out-scoring North Mason 24-6.

Post Jelissa Julmist, hampered by a leg injury for much of the season, didn’t play, but the Wolves still managed to snag 32 rebounds, 19 of them on the offensive glass.

Taryn Johnson had a solid all-around game with four points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Libby Turella added eight rebounds. Sammie Bacon chipped in six points and six boards.

“The guards overall played really good team defense,” Joclin Julmist said. “It was good to get everyone involved tonight, [a] good team win.”

SHS defends home court, tops Kingston

Bates had a team-high nine assists to go with her five points and five steals, while Mixon added 14 points.

Dani Herman chipped in eight points and eight rebounds, and Michaela Green sank two of Sequim’s six 3-pointers.

“All of the girls played well,” coach Joclin Julmist said.
