Girls basketball: Wolves win home finale

The peninsula’s top two prep girls hoops teams both look to advance to regionals this week after sharing the top spot in the Olympic League.

The road will be a bit tougher for the team clad in purple and gold.

Sequim (13-1, 17-3) was slated to open the 16-team West Central District 2/3 tournament on Feb. 15 on the road against Enumclaw with the No. 5 seed — despite having the same league record as No. 1 seed Port Angeles, who opened at home the same night.

The top six teams advancing to regionals.

Sequim can lose its first game and still advance to regionals, but would need to beat No. 12 seed Tyee or No. 13 Orting at home on Feb. 17 and another game on Feb. 19 at Mount Tahoma.

If Sequim and Port Angeles win their district openers, they’ll face each other for a third time this season; the district semifinal would be on Feb. 17 at Sammamish High School, and both teams would be guaranteed berths in the regional tourney.

After splitting the season series, Sequim and Port Angeles (13-1, 14-5) agreed to nix a postseason seeding game slated for Feb. 12, Sequim High athletic director Dave Ditlefsen noted.

“This is the first year that all teams are seeded in districts by a committee and both schools have agreed to allow the committee to seed them as they see fit,” he said in an email. “Both teams have some injuries that they’d like to heal before they start districts on Tuesday and would prefer to not risk further injuries.”

Sending off seniors with a win

After Olympic forfeited a Feb. 1 game in Sequim — scheduled to be the Wolves’ final home game and chance to celebrate its seniors — Sequim added a non-league game against Kingston on Feb. 8 and edged the Buccaneers, 45-41.

Playing without post Jelissa Julmist, the Wolves got a double-double from Jolene Vaara (13 points, 13 rebounds) and strong all-around games from Hannah Wagner (eight points, nine rebounds), Hanna Bates (five points, nine steals) and Taryn Johnson (eight points, four steals).

Sequim led 17-13 by halftime and 35-23 after three quarters, but a barrage of Buccaneer 3-point bombs early in the fourth quarter trimmed Sequim’s lead to a point, but timely buckets by Vaara and Johnson and a Bates free throw gave Sequim the win.

The Wolves also held Kingston standout Ellee Brockman in check. Brockman, Jayla Moon and Brianna Jorgensen each had 12 for the Bucs.

The win helped Sequim tie the school record for wins in a season at 17.

SHS seniors include Wagner, Malory Morey and Addie Smith.
