Even with the heat turned off, Sequim found enough hot hands to knock off their visitors from Bremerton.

Adrienne Haggerty had a key steal and hit a tie-breaking jumper in the final minute for two of her game-high 21 points as the Wolves edged the Knights in the teams’ Olympic League opener on Dec. 7.

A glitch in the SHS gymnasium heating system gave little heat for fans and players alike but that didn’t seem to bother Sequim’s defense, head coach Larry Brown noted.

“We were all over the place,” Brown said, after his team forced 28 Bremerton turnovers, including a pair of key miscues late after the Knights had come back from being down double digits to take a brief lead.

“We were out of place a couple of times and they made us pay for it,” Brown said of the athletic Knights team. “They have some good, talented players; they really pressure.”

Sequim was the team putting on the pressure early, however, jumping out to a 23-16 lead in the first half. The Wolves held Bremerton to just 4-of-22 shooting (18.2 percent) in that first frame, out-rebounding the Knights 19 to 8.

Haggerty hit for 12 points in the first half.

Sequim pushed the lead to 11 before a 9-0 Bremerton run pulled the visitors within three (36-33) after three quarters.

The Knights, led by Michaela Derda (13 points), Elysabeth Lamoureux (11 points each) and quick guard Renee Doss (11 points, five steals) used a 6-0 run to take a 46-45 lead, sinking seven free throws in a row at one point.

With 2:15 remaining, SHS forward Ella Christiansen fouled out and Brown turned to newcomer Hope Glasser to finish the game. That proved to be key, as the freshman hit five second half free throws, including a pair to give Sequim a 47-46 lead.

Bremerton tied the score at 47-47 but on the next Knight possession Haggerty stole a Knight pass, and moments later took an inbound throw from guard Bobbi Sparks and knocked down a free throw line jumper for a 49-47 Sequim lead.

Sequim forced another turnover and Sparks made them pay, finding a driving Madison Green for a layup and 51-47 lead.

Glasser helped clinch the game with a pair of free throws for the game’s final score.

Brown praised Glasser for holding her own when Christiansen fouled out — “Ella’s tough to fill in for,” he said — and guard Jessica Dietzman, who spelled Sparks and added some instant offense off the bench.

“(They have) really shown a lot of maturity. They can run and that translates into some fairly skilled offensive positions.”

Haggerty finished with nine rebounds and five steals.

“(Adrienne) is real aggressive; we’re working on translating that aggressiveness into finely tuned plays,” Brown said. “She can post up, play point. She can play (positions) one through five.”

Christiansen and Glasser had seven points each. Sparks added five points and seven rebounds.

Trojans spoil streak

After winning their first two games of the season, the Wolves (2-1) couldn’t come with a third in a row against Olympic, their visitors from Silverdale, on Dec. 9. Katie Campana scored 18 points and Danielle Monzon added 17 to lead the Trojans to a 53-37 win.
