Girls golf: Shea punches ticket to state

Sarah Shea is headed back to some familiar greens and fairways, and she may have some teammates in tow.

The Sequim High School senior dominated on her home course at The Cedars at Dungeness on May 1, winning the Olympic League championships by nine shots and earning her third state 2A tournament appearance in as many seasons.

Shea, who was medalist in each league meet this season, shot a 76 (4-over-par) at The Cedars to secure one of five state tourney automatic bids.

Teammates Maddie Uranga, Samanatha Smith and Yana Hoesel each qualified for the West Central District tournament set for May 15 at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton. There they’ll take on golfers from Olympic and South Puget Sound leagues, with the top six out of a field of 18 earned state berths.

At the league tourney last week, Uranga shot a 94 and placed sixth — one spot from a state berth — while Smith was seventh (97) and Hoesel tied for 11th with a round of 107. Sequim’s Sara German is second alternate to districts after finishing 16th with a 11 and Sequim’s Angela Carillo Burge finished tied for 21 with a round of 119.

Brilee Triggs of Olympic was second in the league tourney with an 85; Alyssa Ronquillo of Bremerton (88) was third. Mackenzie Lake of Port Townsend won the 1A league tourney with a 91.

“I am so proud of all the girls for their 2018 league title and how well we showed today,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said. “We have a lot of work to do still. I am confident that we will take four players to state.”

The state 2A tourney is set for May 22-23 at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland.
