Girls soccer: Johnson nets 5 goals in rout of Trojans

Sequim striker Taryn Johnson found the back of the net five times as the Wolves overpowered Olympic 6-1 at home in a girls soccer match at Myron Teterud Field on Sept. 20.

Johnson, a speedy blur at the top of the Wolves’ attack, was a first-team All-Olympic League pick last season who led Sequim with 24 goals, including six hat tricks.

She earned another hat trick in 27 minutes against the Trojans.

“Taryn Johnson got it going for us, she got a nice assist from Libby Turella in the third minute,” Sequim coach Ken Garling said.

“In the 14th minute, Taryn scored on another great shot on goal,” he said. “Raimey Brewer had a nice assist and Taryn finished well.”

The hat trick was finalized in the 27th minute.

“[Johnson] just outran their two center defenders and Taryn got a 1-on-1 with the keeper and that’s usually going to go in her favor,” Garling said.

Johnson scored off some deflections after a Brewer corner in the 47th minute, and Brewer added another assist on Johnson’s final goal around the 60-minute mark.

“Raimey and Taryn are working really well together,” Garling said. “They see the field together.”

Jenny Gomez closed out the game with a 73rd minute score assisted by Eve Breithaupt.

Garling also praised center backs Kaia Lestage and Ivy Barrett for their play.

“They are phenomenal back there, they are in synch — when one goes forward the other drops to cover — and they both are so good at anticipating passes,” Garling said.

Vikings win battle of purple, gold

The Wolves (2-2) struggled to defend early on and went down three goals at halftime on the way to a 5-1 Olympic League loss to the Vikings on Sept. 22.

“They scored on us in the first minute,” Garling said. “We just missed Libby Turella scoring off of a corner kick and they took that goal kick down the right side of the field and their left wing made a beautiful cross and we didn’t pick up their forward.”

North Kitsap added scores in the 27th and 36th minute.

“We were having trouble tracking runners in the central area, having trouble picking up the runners coming through and they were capitalizing on our mistakes,” Garling said.

Sequim notched its score a few minutes into the second half.

“We adjusted our formation to put an extra body in midfield and settled down a bit,” Garling said.

In the 48th or 49th minute, Brewer sent in a corner and it bounced off Gomez, and Johnson was there to notch the Wolves’ lone score, Garling said.

North Kitsap stretched the lead back out late.

“[In the] second half we played a better match, we got forward, we had more chances on goal, but when you play a team like North Kitsap you have to bring your best effort for all 80 minutes,” Garling said.
