Girls soccer: Sequim streaking into postseason

With one game remaining in the regular season, Sequim’s Wolves have a great position for the postseason — amidst a mess atop the Olympic League standings.

The Wolves on Oct. 25 shut out lowly Kingston (5-0) for the second time in as many games, pushing Sequim’s record to 9-4 in league play entering their regular season finale, a home match-up with North Mason on Oct. 27.

As of Oct. 25, Bainbridge (10-3) and Port Angeles (9-3) hold a slight edge over the Wolves as they prep for the West Central District playoffs, set to run Nov. 2, 4 and 6; match-ups are unclear until the regular season winds up, Sequim coach Ken Garling said.

Sequim racked up a pair of shutouts last week.

The Wolves scored five goals in the first half in a 6-0 win over Bremerton on Oct. 19.

Sequim’s Taryn Johnson got her third hat trick of the season, with all three of her goals in the first half.

“We came out really strong in the first half,” Garling said. “It was a great, great win.”

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak; the Wolves lost both of those games 1-0.

Johnson had goals in the seventh, 10th and 35th minutes.

“She’s a true striker. When she gets goals, she gets goals in bunches,” Garling said.

Jennyfer Gomez, who had an assist on one of Johnson’s goals, scored one of her own in the 35th minute unassisted.

Teagen Moore scored in the 36th minute “from a really tight angle,” Garling said.

Aliyah Weber finished off the scoring with a goal in the 63rd minute with an assist to Hannah Wagner.

Garling said that, on top of the goal scorers, freshman Libby Turrela was brought up from the JV team to play varsity and played well. He said Kaia Lesage also played a solid game at the center-back position.

“She was all over the place. That’s her best game that I’ve seen,” Garling said.

“This is fun to see,” Garling said.

The Wolves added a 6-0 rout of Kingston on Oct. 21.

Wagner opened the scoring in the 21st minute off a corner kick from Johnson for the lone first half goal, but the Wolves exploded for another five scores in the second frame.

Wagner scored in the opening minutes of the second half at the 43rd minute, with Gomez earning the assist. Johnson got on the score sheet in the 47th minute with a goal from just inside the 18-yard box to make it 3-0.

Kingston then had an own goal in the 51st minute after Johnson crossed a ball into the box and a Kingston player tried to clear the ball, inadvertently notching another Sequim score.

Gomez scored in the 70th minute off an Alex Salas assist, and Johnson in the 79th minute with a goal similar to one she had earlier.
