Sequim’s girls soccer squad can make their postseason plans.
The Wolves, winners of five of their past six games heading into their Oct. 23 game against Kingston, turned around an 0-6 start in league play to earn a berth in the West Central District tournament after a pair of victories last week, including a key, 2-0 win at North Mason on Oct. 18.
Yana Hoesel netted a pair of penalty kick scores while the SHS defense held strong against what Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde called a “relentless” attack for the shutout.
With the Olympic League’s No. 4 seed, Sequim (4-7-0 in league play, 6-8-1 overall) moves on to play at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.
The Wolves’ opponent, the South Puget Sound League’s No. 6 seed, has not been determined; the SPSL’s tournament concludes Oct. 25.
Against North Mason, Vander Velde said the Wolves’ confidence was key.
“They out played the Bulldogs by playing calm, communicating and protecting each other,” he said.
Sequim’s Daisy Ryan was fouled early in the first half, setting up Hoesel’s first PK.
Later in the half, Sequim’s Hope Glasser attacked the Bulldog goal and was fouled to set up Hoesel’s second score.
Vander Velde called the second half a “bit disjointed” as North Mason looked to get back in the game, but that SHS defenders Mary McAleer and Gabby Happe “did an impressive job holding the back line together to keep the Bulldogs out.”
Vander Velde also credited Natalya James and Eden Johnson with solid games.
Sequim also had a 5-1 non-league victory against the Port Townsend Redhawks on Oct. 16.
