From despair and disappointment to elation and hope, all in an afternoon.

Sequim’s girls’ soccer squad came within three minutes of a win against their rivals from Port Angeles on Saturday, only to see Roughrider Maddie Boe knot the game in the waning moments and help P.A. escape with a 2-2 draw.

Sequim was seeking its first win against Port Angeles since the 2007 season.

Still, co-head coach Victor Lancheros said, the outcome was much like a victory for his young Wolves.

“It’s a positive; I thought we held our own a good portion of the game,” Lancheros said. “The kids played hard. They got tired in the second half.”

Missing or settling for reduced minutes from four starters, the Wolves gave up a first-half goal on a turnover deep in its territory that Roughrider Brittany McBride converted on an arcing shot from 30 yards out.

Maeve Harris got the equalizer early in the second half when she put back a rebound off a corner kick.

With 14 minutes remaining, Vianey Cadenas put Sequim ahead with a shot from the right side and Sequim looked in control.

But the Riders pressed Sequim’s defense late and it paid off, as a ball the Wolves’ defense couldn’t clear found its way to Boe’s foot.

”I think they got lucky on a couple of shots,” Lancheros said.

He noted he was proud to see a number of junior varsity players fill in for injured varsity players.

“The team is coming along,” he said. “We have little things to work on. (Success) comes with time.”

The Wolves earned a tie earlier in the week at Bremerton. The Knights opened the scoring at the four-minute mark when Evelin Marcial found the net. Sequim’s Cadenas earned the equalizer about 15 minutes into the second half, but neither team was able to net a game-winner.

The Wolves were scheduled to play Sept. 25 at home against Kingston.

Sequim is in Silverdale to take on Klahowya on Sept. 27 and hosts North Mason on Oct. 2.
