Girls soccer: Wolves top PA for playoff berth

Play on, Wolves.

Sequim’s girls soccer squad is still alive and kicking after topping rival Port Angeles 2-1 on Oct. 23.

The Wolves got a tie-breaking goal from Leslie Cisneros with about 90 seconds remaining that lifted Sequim into the fifth and final playoff spot — past the host Roughriders, no less — and set up a district seeding game tonight (Oct. 25) at No. 4-seeded Kingston.

The winner of that game moves on to play league champ Klahowya on Saturday, Oct. 27, for one of the top seeds to the West Central District playoffs. The losing squad enters districts as the No. 5 seed and plays the South Puget Sound League’s No. 5 seed on Oct. 31.

Against Port Angeles, Shayla Northern put P.A. up 1-0 with a score in the first half. Sequim’s Shelby Lott tied the game at 1-1 with a drive from about 35 yards out. Needing a win to pass Port Angeles in the standings and earn that final playoff berth, Sequim got the game-winner when Heidi Vereide found Cisneros for a score just before the final whistle.
