Girls swimming: Port Angeles hands SHS first loss in pool

Port Angeles swam past rival Sequim 117-62 in a girls swim meet Sept. 20 at William Shore Memorial Pool.

The Roughriders qualified one relay team, the 400 freestyle, and two individual state times in the meet, along with securing five new individual district qualifying times.

For Sequim, Sonja Govertsen won the 50 freestyle in 25.79 seconds, and Jasmine Itti won the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.05.

The Wolves’ 200 freestyle relay team of Govertsen, Meguire Vandervelde, Itti and Mia Coffman won with a time of 1:49.55.

Postseason marks at Swimvitational

Sequim’s Wolves posted some strong times and earned postseason berths at the Swimvitational at Olympic High School in Silverdale on Sept. 15.

Govertsen took second place in the 100 free with a 56.99 mark, a state-meet qualifier. She also tied for second place in the 50 free (25.78).

Coffman took fourth in the 500 free with a 5:40.89 mark, also good for a state meet berth. She added a sixth-place finish in the 200 free (2:10.20).

Sequim’s 100 medley relay A team (Coffman, Sydney Swanson, Govertsen, Itti) was third with a 2:04.17 finish, while the Wolves’ 400 free relay A team finished in 4:02.51, third place and a little more than a second off of a state qualifying time.

Other top Sequim finishers included: Itti in the 50 free (fifth, 26.37) and 100 free (59.05); Anna Price in the 100 backstroke (seventh, 1:16.52) and 100 fly (ninth, 1:20.16); Swanson in the 100 breaststroke (sixth, 1:22.35), 200 IM (eighth, 2:42.09) and 200 free (12th, 2:34.50); Lauren Sundin in the 100 backstroke (eighth, 1:18.12), and Natalie George in the 100 breaststroke (13th, 1:34.73) and 50 free (17th, 30.82).

SHS’ 200 free relay team (Sundin, Heidi Schmitt, Swanson, George) was sixth (2:03.52) and the 200 medley relay B team (Sundin, Price, George, Schmitt) was seventh (2:19.13)

Looking ahead

Sequim hosts Port Townsend on Sept. 27 and North Kitsap on Oct. 4.

The Wolves are at Klahowya (Silverdale) on Oct. 11 before hosting their final regular league meet of the season set for Oct. 18 against Bremerton.
