Sequim’s own Dani Barrow and Julie Miller have their tickets to districts punched. So do Cassi Calderon and Jessica Craig, who’ll join Barrow and Miller on the 200 free relay team, as Sequim prepares for the West Central District meet at Hazen High School in Renton Nov. 2-3.

And after the Olympic League meet last week in Port Angeles, Sequim diver Emily Van Dyken is headed to districts, too. Van Dyken, a sophomore in her first year of diving, also earned a spot at the class 2A state meet with her effort at the league meet, scoring 247.6 points.

Sequim coach Anita Benitez is aiming to get even more Sequim athletes to districts with wildcards after the Wolves wrapped up their Olympic League schedule at the league meet Oct. 23.

Several Sequim swimmers posted top-10 finishes, and Van Dyken earned her spot at districts. Several other SHS athletes who came close to district times may earn wildcard berths to districts as well.

At the league meet, Sequim’s 200 medley relay team (Barrow, Calderon, Miller and Craig) took first with a 2:22 finish, a little more than two seconds off a district-qualifying time. That same relay squad finished fifth in the 400 free relay, about eight seconds from a district qualifying finish.

Other strong Sequim finishes included Barrow in the 100 free (sixth), Calderon in the 100 free (seventh) and 50 free (eighth) and Anna Mittmann in the 100 breaststroke (eighth).

Earlier this season, Barrow qualified for districts in the 200 individual medley while Miller earned a spot with a strong 100 breaststroke time.

Top swimmers at districts and automatic qualifiers advance to the class 2A state meet, set for Nov. 9-10 in Federal Way.
