Girls tennis: Hastings earns return trip to state tourney

Kendall Hastings is headed back to the Class 2A state tennis tournament.

The Sequim High senior swept through three matches before falling in the final at the West Central District tournament last week in Bremerton, and will take on Audrey Zdunich in the opening round of the Class 2A state tournament on Friday, May 26, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

Hastings earned a straight set win over K Hoang of Highline, then dominated in a 6-2, 6-0 win in the quarterfinals against Iris Ma of Sammamish.

Hastings then topped Luis Diebold of Foss, the South Puget Sound’s top-seeded player, in the semifinals.

In the championship match, Sammamish’s Taraneh Khalighi topped Hastings 6-2, 6-01, for the title and top district seed. (Khalighi placed third at last year’s state tourney.)

As a junior, Hastings went 2-2 and placed eighth. This season, she’s amassed a 14-4 record.

Teammate Calleigh Thompson qualified as the Olympic League’s fifth seed but was ousted in losses to Diebold and Clover Park’s Sania Williams. Thompson finished 14-7 for the season.

Sequim’s Garrett Little, who won the West Central District singles title in October, plays in the 2A state boys tourney at the same time. He takes on Vijay Lin of Pullman in the opening round.
