Girls tennis: Hastings, Gale, doubles duo advance to districts

Sequim junior Kendall Hastings, senior Allie Gale and senior doubles partners Jordan Hegtvedt and Malory Morey are headed to the West Central District tourney after second place finishes at the Olympic League tournament last week.

Hastings, who won a league title last year in doubles play, went 3-1 at the league tourney held May 9-10 in Poulsbo. She earned wins over teammate Payton Smithson and Port Angeles’ Waverly Mead and Liberty Lauer, before falling in the final to North Kitsap’s Teegan DeVries.

Hegtvedt and Morey also went 3-1, topping North Kitsap’s Evee Beers and Julia Beatty 6-3 and 6-4 before falling in the finals to Kaiya Moore and Clair Caldwell of Olympic.

Gale placed fifth after going 3-3. She edged Port Angeles’ Lauer 7-5, 2-6 and 6-1 in the fifth/sixth place game to earn the fifth and final seed to districts.

SHS’s Sydney Hegvedt and Danielle Herman picked up a win in doubles play and nearly earned a second, falling in a third set tiebreaker in the consolation bracket.

The West Central bi-district tournament is May 19-20 at Bremerton Tennis Club, featuring 16 singles and doubles teams — six from the South Puget Sound League and five each from the Olympic League and KingCo League.

The class 2A state tourney is set for May 27-28 at Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
