Girls tennis: SHS sweeps Bulldogs, Buccaneers to improve to 7-4

Even without their top singles player, Sequim dominated an April 18 home match against Kingston, sweeping the Buccaneers, 7-0.

Tiffany Lam won her first set and survived a 7-6 (8-6) second set over the Bucs’ Christina Prescott at No. 1 singles to improve to 10-1 on the season, while teammate Amara Gonzalez topped Kylie Sandstrom 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles; she’s now 6-2 for the campaign. Sydney Thomas-Harris didn’t lose a point in a No. 3 singles match against Sarah Lexian.

At No. 1 doubles, Sydney Hegtvedt and Dani Herman got their third win of the season as a duo in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alena Koch and Cloie Rosas. Kendall Day and Payton Smithson topped Kingston’s Shya Larsen and Jane Sperry 6-0, 6-1, while Azlyn Judd and Kristine Prorok blanked the Bucs’ Brynlee Franklin and Elena Mandos, 6-0 and 6-0.

A day prior, Sequim similarly routed North Mason in a 7-0 sweep on April 17 in Belfair.

Calleigh Thompson won at No. 1singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Emma Hunt, while Lam topped Floor Hulshof 6-2, 6-1, and Amara Gonzalez swept Dorsey Crowther 6-0, 6-2.

Hegtvedt and Herman topped Lauryn hicks and Kalli Wynn 6-4, 6-3, while Day and Thomas-Harris didn’t lose a point in a sweep of Isabelle Bailey and Briana Cuauhtena. At No. 3 doubles, Smithson and Keira Morey had the closes match but still manage a two-set win over Bulldogs Athena and Isis Bautista. To round out the action, Sequim’ Judd and Prorok topped Brooke Hoard and Sawyer Stanley 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 doubles.

Sequim started the week with a 6-1 loss to league power North Kitsap on April 15.

Perennial state tourney placer Teegan Devries and NK teammate Val Torres took singles wins for NK while Sequim’s Lam topped Viking Noelle Oberhultzer 6-1, 6-0 for the lone SHS victory. Sequim’s Herman and Hegtvedt put up a fight in No. doubles before falling in three sets to Olivia Cary and Beckham Ochs.

Looking ahead

Sequim was slated to play at Olympic on April 22; results were not available at press time. The Wolves host Port Angeles on April 24.

The Olympic League tournament is set for May 10-11 in Poulsbo.

Top singles players and doubles duos advance from the league meet to the West Central District bi-district tourney, scheduled for May 17-18 at the Kitsap Tennis Athletic Club in Bremerton.
