Girls tennis: SHS’s Hugoniot places 6th at league tourney

Sequim’s girls team didn’t advance any players to districts this year from the Olympic League Tournament on May 10-11 at North Kitsap High School.

 

After consecutive appearances at districts and state, Sequim’s girls team didn’t advance any players to districts this year from the Olympic League Tournament on May 10-11 at North Kitsap High School.

Sequim’s Izzy Hugoniot took sixth in singles after losing her her first match to Madi Skansi of North Kitsap 6-0, 6-0. In the consolation, Hugoniot recovered to win three in a row with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Claire Fritschler of Port Angeles, 6-4, 6-3 win over Audrey Little of Port Angeles, and a win over Flynn Hibbs of North Kitsap (no score available). In a rematch from her opening set, Hugoniot lost to Skansi 6-2, 6-3 for fifth place.

Sequim’s Stephanie LaCour went 2-2 on the day after losing her first match to Hibbs 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. In the consolation she faced teammate Tea Gauthun, who went 0-2 on the day, and won 6-4, 5-7, 10-8. LaCour followed that with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Makinna Skjonsby of North Mason but lost to Skansi prior to the fifth/sixth place matchup.

Sequim’s doubles teams went 1-4 on the day with Katey Wake and Hannah D’Amico winning their opener 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) over Astrid Lundberg and Terri Johnson of North Mason. But they lost their next match 6-0, 6-0 to Sam Macotte and Elena Vasquez of North Kitsap.

Teammates Kaylee Cassal and Jessica Craig lost 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 to Emily Nguyen and Jasmine Palaganas of Bremerton in their opener and both of Sequim’s doubles teams lost in the consolation bracket to doubles teams who did not place.

On the season, Sequim went 9-6 in the Olympic League placing fourth.
