The purple and gold hit the fairways once again, and this year raised plenty of green for local health care.
The Olympic Sling team of Todd Negus, Chad Wagner, Paul Reed, Bill Evanstead and Husky celebrity Tim Burnham beat 37 other teams to win the 12th-annual Sonny Sixkiller UW Husky Celebrity Golf Classic at The Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course on July 28.
Presented by Wilder Auto Center, the tourney raised a net $81,000 for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation — the tournament’s beneficiary and the organizer of the tournament, along with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and The Cedars at Dungeness.
Each of the 38 foursomes in the tournament were joined by a Husky celebrity.
The Irwin Dental Team of Todd Irwin, Jade Tisdale, Matt Averill, Jason Doig and Husky celebrity Robb Weller finished second.
Burnham was an offensive guard for the 1984 Husky team that finished with No. 2 in the nation with a 11-1 record. Weller was a Husky yell leader in the early 1970s when he invented the “Wave,” the cheer that gets spectators to their feet and ripples though a stadium.
Sixkiller, who led the nation in passing in 1970, recruited all of the celebrities, which included several Husky and NFL greats, including NFL veteran Lincoln Kennedy.
Also playing were four former University of Washington stars who graduated from Sequim and Port Angeles High School.
Sequim High grad Derrin Doty starred for the Husky baseball team from 1990-1993. A 1984 graduate of Port Angeles High, Scott Jones is the only Roughrider to play in the NFL. Former Rider Matt Lane was the starting catcher for the Huskies from 2004-2006, and former Roughrider Brandon Irvine pitched for the Husky baseball team from 1994-1997.
