Golf: Drive for the Cure tournament raises $14K+

Sunland Golf & Country Club members raised a record $14,860 at their recent Drive for the Cure Tournament, an event that raises money for area women who do not have insurance or the means to pay for the procedure through Olympic Medical Center Foundation’s mammogram program.

Since 2011, Sunland has given a total of $51,760 to OMC to support this cause. An anonymous Sunland donor has helped reach this goal by donating via a matching fund since 2012.

Along with tourney fees, Drive for the Cure raised funds via hole sponsors and memorial sponsors; a raffle for 24 gift baskets; a putting contest; sales of mulligans and magic putts, and numerous donations from individuals and the business community. Contest and major sponsors included Sound Community Bank, Sequim Heath and Rehabilitation, and Windermere Real Estate.

This year’s Drive for the Cure saw 100 men and women participate in the tourney and 110 luncheon attendees. The game was a modified scramble for both nine and 18 holes of golf. First place winners for 18 holes of golf were Doug, Mark, Andrew and Christopher Lux from Lynnwood and Port Townsend. The team of Mary O’Brien, Joan Hartnett, Kris Slack and Sandra Ryby won the nine-hole event.

Crazy Drive winners were Joanne Estes and Ken Orth for 18 holes and Eileen Leftwich and Jerry Fowler for nine holes. Closest to the pin winners were Judy Reno, Steve Wilson, Betty Gustfield, Bruce Mullikin and Cheryl Coulter.
