Golf: Sequim boys, girls finish with wins over Eagles

League championship to determine Wolves’ state bids

Sequim’s golf teams finished their seasons with wins at home on May 6.

The top four boys, led again by Jack Shea’s 34, shot 155 to Klahowya’s 176.

Travis Priest recorded a 39 on the front nine at The Cedars at Dungeness for the Wolves followed by Alex McCracken at 40 and Jade Arnold at 42.

The Eagles kept it close though with Aaron Holiday shooting second overall with a 36 followed by Andrew Nelson’s 37 for third. Garett Belzing shot fourth for the Eagles at 48.

On the season, the boys finished 7-2 in head-to-head matches and third in the Olympic League.

For the girls, both Alex McMenamin and Brianna Kettel shot personal bests against Klahowya.

McMenamin went for 36 on the front nine holes and Kettel shot 46 to lead the Lady Wolves to a 114-90 point win to finish undefeated and as Olympic League champions.

Kailee Price came in third for the Wolves and fourth overall shooting a 49 while Sarah Shea shot a 49 and Kelly Anders a 50.

McKenna Kendall shot a 44 to lead the Eagles with Bailey Koerner going for 50 as their No. 2 golfer on the day.

Wolves coach Gary Kettel said Sequim’s top six girls golfers, including Sydney Balkan, are shooting among the top 20 golfers in the Olympic League.

“They’ve all had good rounds and are all shooting at 50 or under consistently,” he said.

“It’s a really good group of girls. Every one of them is improved as they went along.”

Kettel said the most improved golfer is freshman Sarah Shea.

“She really worked hard at it even though she didn’t start the season on varsity in her first match,” he said. “Now she’s our No. 2 or 3 golfer.”

Boys and girls golfers played at the Olympic League tournament on May 12 at The Cedars at Dungeness with the top seven golfers automatically going to state.

The next nine scores go to districts with the top three golfers there moving onto state.
