Golf: Wolves continue to roll in league play

With a sweep of a short-handed Kingston squad last week, Sequim’s boys and girls golf squads are well on their way to repeating as Olympic League champions.

SHS senior Sarah Shea, a Western Washington University Commit, shot a 2-over 38 to earn medalist honors against the Buccaneers on April 19, as the Wolves’ girls squad improved to 8-0 heading into the final week of the season.

Shea had four putts lip out and could have been under par for her round on the front nine at The Cedars at Dungeness, Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said. “They could have just as easily gone in. She hit the ball as good as I’ve seen her hit it all year.”

Samantha Smith was second with a 52 while freshman Jessica German shot a 57, her best of the season by four shots. Maddie Uranga finished in 58 shots while Yana Hoesel shot a 60.

Maddi McClain was Kingston’s lone golfer at 61.

Sequim’s boys similarly had a strong finish against Kingston to improve to 8-0. Low honors went to sophomore Andrew Vanderberg of Sequim with a 38. Blake Wiker and Liam Payne tied for second with rounds of 41.

“This was Liam’s low round of the year and is gearing up for a strong post season showing,” Sequim boys’ coach Bill Shea said.

Freshman Garrett Hoesel added a low round of 48.

SHS girls get momentum

Sequim’s girls started the week strong, placing ninth out of 21 teams of various classifications at the 26th-annual Burlington-Edison Girls Invitational at Skagit Golf and Country Club on April 16.

Sarah Shea placed ninth out of more than 60 golfers, shooting an 88 in poor weather that pushed players to be on the course for more than six hours to complete 18 holes.

“The weather was horrible,” Smithson said. “I’ve played a lot of golf in my life and I’ve personally never played in as conditions that were that bad.”

Smith added a 115 and Yana Hoesel a 118 for the Wolves. Maddie Uranga was third in the nine-hole portion of the event with a 50 for Sequim.

Central Kitsap’s Brittany Kwon won the individual title with a 76 and Mercer Island repeated as team champs.

Sequim added a victory over 1A Klahowya on April 17, topping the Eagles by 33 shots at The Cedars at Dungeness. Shea was again medalist with a 37 while Uranga shot a career-best 44; Smith finished with a 55 and Hoesel had a round of 56.

Looking ahead

Sequim’s golf teams were slated to host Port Angeles on April 24 — results of the match were not available for this section.

Sequim’s boys play at the Tim Higgins invitational in Bremerton on April 26 — where the Wolves look for their third consecutive tourney title — and at the Duke Streeter Invite in Port Angeles on April 27.

Both Wolves teams tee it up on their home course at The Cedars at Dungenes on May 1 for the Olympic League tournament, when top finishers earn state 2A or West Central District tourney automatic berths. The district “second chance” tournament is May 15 in Bremerton.

This year’s state 2A tournaments are set for May 22-23 in Spokane, with the girls at Indian Canyon Golf Course and the boys playing at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course.
