Golf: Wolves open with win over rival PA SLIDESHOW

Several Sequim golfers set or match personal bests

Sunny skies and wins over a rival were a good combination to start the season for the Sequim golf teams last week.

The Wolves’ boys defeated the Port Angeles Roughriders on March 16 at The Cedars at Dungeness by 50 strokes 159-209 and the girls won in a nearly equal fashion 179-227.

Last year’s Olympic League MVPs Jack Shea and Alex McMenamin led the boys and girls with Shea shooting 2-under-par-36 on the front nine holes, and McMenamin shot par, which tied her best score in a school match last year.

Freshman Blake Wiker came in at No. 2 for all boys tying his best at 1-over-par (37) followed by fellow freshman Joey Oliver shooting his best at 44 and junior Josiah Carter also a 44.

The top four boys’ and girls’ scores made up team scores, but Sequim’s next two boys Jake Sparks (46) and Jade Arnold (51) kept pace with their teammates and opponents.

For PA, Mathew Locke took their No. 1 spot at 47, followed by Royce Duncan and Cadon Wilder at 53 and Parker Elias at 56.

Following McMenamin for the girls was sophomore Sarah Shea shooting a 42, PA’s Rose Shinn-Clark a 53, Sequim senior Megan O’Mera at 55 and Sequim junior Sydney Balkan at 56.

PA’s Maddie Boe tied at No. 2 with Hannah Almaden for the Roughriders, shooting 57 each while Hailey Scott went No. 4 at 61.

Sequim’s boys travel to Port Ludlow Golf Course today, March 23, to take on Chimacum and both boys and girls travel to Kingston on March 28 and host Port Townsend on March 30.
