Grey Wolves gearing up for 2022 softball season

It’s time to dust off the softball gloves: Sequim’s Senior Softball Grey Wolves are in full swing.

The club is inviting interested older men and women who love the game of softball to come out and play. Registration is under way now.

The Grey Wolves are a co-ed recreational league with age requirements of 50-plus for men and 45-plus for women. Players’ ages currently vary from the mid-50s into their 70s. The league has greatly varying skill levels.

The club, which promotes co-ed senior softball in the Sequim and Olympic Peninsula region, has two key rules: “have fun” and “play safe.” The recreational league has modified rules that emphasize limited contact to help ensure lower risk for injuries.

“We have people who have played all their lives or newcomers who haven’t picked up a bat in many years,” league president David Unruh said.

Players gather at Sequim’s Carrie Blake Community Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, with warm-ups starting at 8:30 a.m., batting practice at about 8:45 a.m., and a game starting at about 9:45 a.m.

Former high school, college, church league and recreational ballplayers in their 20s, 30s and 40s have enjoyed embracing the game again, club members said. A few players go south for the winter, but most turn out year-round, weather permitting.

Community members are encouraged to join the Grey Wolves in enjoying the game, meeting new people and getting some good exercise as well.

For more information, call Unruh at 425-367-2401 or Annette Hanson at 360-670-6774, or email to greywolves.senior.softball@gmail.com.

Or, show up at the Carrie Blake Community Park ball fields behind the Guy Cole Center after 9 a.m. on a Tuesday or Thursday morning and watch them play, then decide whether or not to join.
