Gymnastics: Combined prep squad wins two of three meets

A combined squad of gymnasts from Sequim, Port Angeles and Crecent made the most of their shortened season, earning two wins and falling by a single point in a third in its only three meets of 2021.

The team — which included Sequim High gymnasts Amara Brown, Kori Miller, Alex Schmadeke, Emma Sharp, Susannah Sharp and Ellie Turner — kicked off the season with a win over Kingston on May 29, with the peninsula team scoring 146.55 points and the Buccaneers not fielding enough athletes to score.

Schmadeke won the all-around with 31.35 total points. Emma Sharp was second at 30.05, Mei-Ying Harper Smith of Port Angeles in third (28.7), Susannah Sharp fourth (27.7) and Aubrie Scott of Crescent sixth (23.6).

In the vault, Susannah Sharp came in first with an 8.15 and sister Emma was second with a 7.9. Turner placed fifth with a 7.35 and Schmadeke sixth with a 7.0. On the bars, Schmadeke was first with a 7.0, Susannah Sharp second with a 6.1, Emma Sharp fourth (5.9) and Turner sixth (4.3). On the beam, Schmadeke won again with a 7.8 score. Emma Sharp was second with a 7.7, and Brown fifth (7.1). In the floor exercise, Schmadeke came in first with an 8.65, Emma Sharp was second (8.55) and Susannah Sharp third (7.55).

Victorious over Vikings

Against North Kitsap on June 2, the Sequim/Port Angeles/Crescent team out-scored visiting North Kitsap, 149.7-143.65.

Schmadeke first overall with a score of 32.45, while Emma Sharp of Sequim was third at 31.25 and Susannah Sharp of Sequim was fifth at 27.8.

In the vault, Emma Sharp won with an 8.4, while Susannah Sharp was third with 8.35. Schmadeke was fourth with an 8.25 and Miller was sixth with an 8.2. In the bars, Schmadeke took first with a 7.15, Miller was third with a 7.1 and Susannah Sharp was fifth with a 5.8. On the beam, Emma Sharp came in first place with an 8.85 and Schmadeke was third with an 8.2. In the floor exercise, Schmadeke took second with an 8.85, while Emma Sharp was third with an 8.6.

Spartans win by slim margin

Bainbridge spoiled a shot at a 3-0 season finish for the Sequim/Port Angeles/ Crescent squad, winning 150.45-149.45 on June 4.

Schmadeke took first in the bars (7.45), and second in the vault (8.3), balance beam (8.9) and floor exercise (8.7) to once again take top honors all-around points (33.35).

Sequim/PA teammate Susannah Sharp was fourth (30.35 points), after placing first on the vault (8.4), fourth on floor exercise (8.4). Her sister Emma tied for fifth (28.9 points), placing third on the floor exercise (8.5) and sixth on the vault (7.9). Miller had strong finishes on the bars (second, 7.0 points), and vault (tied for fifth, 8.0 points).
