Gymnastics: Klahhane athletes cap season at regionals

Five Klahhane Gymnastics athletes competed in the USA Gymnastics Region 2 Xcel Championships, held April 21-23 in Everett. The meet saw 669 Gold-, Platinum- and Diamond-level gymnasts from six states earn spots at the competition through their state meets.

The Regional Championships are an individual competition with no team scores. Klahhane’s Bronze Team participated in the Regional Invitational for bronze and silver teams.

In the championship meet in the Gold Division competition on April 21, Elyse Brown finished seventh in all-around scoring with 37.475 points in the Youth A age group, placing fifth on uneven bars (9.40 points) and seventh on vault (9.30).

Four Gymnasts represented Klahhane in the Platinum Division competition on April 22. Scarlett Sullivan led the group with a 14th place finish (36.275) in the Junior A age group. She earned eighth place in two events, scoring 9.40 on both balance beam and floor exercise. Lucy Spelker finished 19th in the Junior C age group, also picking up an eighth place medal on floor exercise (9.40). Mariah Traband placed 24th in the Child B age group and teammate Kira Hartman finished 26th in the Child C age group.

On April 23, the Invitational team and individual competition was held, featuring some of the top younger Xcel teams from the region. Klahhane’s team took third with a team score of 115.10p points, behind Naydenov Gymnastics of Vancouver (115.25) and S.P.O.R.T of Wenatchee (116.25)

In the individual competition, Carley Mae Riggs was first in the Child A age group, scoring 38.35 points. Klahhane dominated the competition in the Junior B age group, taking four of the top eight places. Raeleigh Thomason (38.15 points) placed second, with teammates Harper Waterkotte (fourth, 37.80), Morgan Smith (fifth, 37.55) and Lainey DePiro (eighth, 37.20) close behind.

Makinlee Thomason was fifth in the Child B age group (37.45). Paytynn Lindley was sixth in a deep Junior A age division (38.05), and Charlotte Nevill was 11th in the Child A division (36.70).

These meets conclude the Klahhane Xcel Team 2022-’23 competition season.
