This coming weekend, the Sequim High School students will be on Washington’s biggest prep gymnastics stage together, along with their teammates from Port Angeles.

The Roughriders and the Sequim duo earned state 2A/3A meet berths after strong finishes at the West Central District meet at Mount Rainier High School on Feb. 14.

Port Angeles grabbed the fourth and final team state berth with 148.2 cumulative points, behind district champion Enumclaw (159.45 points), Columbia River (155.575) and Auburn Riverside (151.25). Nine full teams competed at the district tourney.

At districts the top four teams advance to state along with the top six all-around athletes not on state qualifying teams. In addition, the top 17 athletes in each individual event (bars, beam, floor and vault) are selected.

Sequim’s Pineau will be competing at state on vault, bars and floor, while Albin is moving on to state in beam.

Port Angeles’ Maya Wharton was the lone local athlete to earn a top-10 event finish, earning 10th in the floor exercise with 9.2 points.

The Washington state 2A/3A gymnastics meet is set for Feb. 20-21 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall in Tacoma.
