Hardcourt action heats up at Saundra Kent tournament

The first weekend was marked with wet, brooding clouds; the second, with 90-degree heat and blue skies.

Either way, the competition was fierce for both weekends as the Saundra Kent Memorial tennis tournament concluded Sunday with crowning of eight pairs of doubles champions.

Sequim was well represented once again, having at least one doubles partner champ in nearly each division.

Sequim spouses Allison and Doug Hastings continued their strong summer. A week after picking up singles victories at Saundra Kent, the duo won the 4.5 doubles bracket by beating Kyle McKenzie and Justine Textor in an all-Sequim final. Doug added a win with David Godfrey in the men’s 4.5 division as they edged another Sequim pair – McKenzie and Mark Textor – in the final.

Sequim’s Valerie Allard and Andul Robinson won a cross-peninsula rivalry match, topping Port Angeles’ Donna Howe and Shirley Peters in the women’s 3.5 doubles bracket.

Stu Sherman of Sequim picked up a pair of wins last weekend, teaming with Debra Knutson to win the 4.0 mixed doubles bracket and teaming with Craig Heath to take the men’s 3.5 doubles title.

Sequim’s own Branette Richards and Karen Chrisman edged daughter-mother duo Allison Hastings and Beverly Hoffman 6-3, 7-5 in what turned out to be the championship match in the round-robin, women’s 4.0 doubles division.
