Klahhane gymnasts open strong in season’s first meet

The Klahhane Xcel Team opened the competitive season with good showings at the Holiday Express Critique Meet in Kent on Dec. 9.

Competing in the Gold Division, MeiYing Harper-Smith won the Senior C All-Around title with a score of 37.00 points and individual titles on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Harper-Smith also received the Judges Award for outstanding dance execution on floor exercise. Kayli Sexton was third on vault in the Junior C age group.

In the evening session, Kira Hartman placed second in All-Around (36.05 points) in the Bronze Division. Also turning in excellent performances in the Bronze Division were Leilah Franich and Layla Parker with identical scores of 35.60, Sequim’s Ella Mote (35.25), Kenna Pittman (35.0) and Coralie Lewis (33.6).

In the Silver Division, three Klahhane gymnasts took third place AA awards: Jessamyn Schindler (36.75 points) in Senior B age group, Mariah Traband (36.55) in the Junior A age group, and Scarlett Sullivan (36.30) in the Junior C age group. Also performing well were Lauren Cline of Sequim (36.0) an Ava Harris (35.15).

The meet was individual competition and evaluation only with judges from across Washington and guest judges from Oregon and Texas. No team awards were given.

The team will now use the information and experience to prepare for the Battle in Bellevue set for Jan. 18-20.
