The North Olympic Peninsula Mountaineers Lacrosse Team hosted a two-day clinic Aug. 2-3 to much success, organizers said.

Boys in grades 7-12 worked on passing, catching, cradling and more at the Agnew Fields, 1240 N. Barr Road. The middle schoolers brought in the Skagit Valley Flyers MS team coached by Tyler Brumbaugh, a Port Angeles High School graduate, for a scrimmage.

Two coaches from the Mountaineers’ league, Tim Mackey from Lake Tapps Lacrosse, and Bob Holland, player on the University of Maryland 1974 NCAA National Championship team, led more than 30 boys in improving their skills for the 2014 season going February-May.

During the summer, players practice once a week at various Sequim and Port Angeles locations. So far, six adults with the Mountaineers were trained by the U.S. Lacrosse, the national governing body, and completed the Level I boys coaching course, which emphasized technical skills and positive coaching strategies.

Organizers of the team said this is significant because it shows the dedication of local parents and interested adults to the development of peninsula youths.

There are teams for boys in high school and middle school, fifth/sixth grade. Girls can join a middle school and high school team, too.

The Mountaineers hold a general meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Agnew Good Neighbor’s Hall across from the Agnew Field.
