It took three weeks into the young season, but the Pirates have a winning streak.
Peninsula’s men’s basketball squad earned a pair of close road wins last week to improve to 5-4 heading into a tournament in Oregon this week.On Dec. 11, the Pirates overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to knock off the Centralia College Trailblazers 80-78.
Dimitri Amos came off the bench to lead PC with 22 points and, despite a 2-for-10 effort from long range, Pirate shooting star Ryley Callaghan scored 20 and snagged seven rebounds in the win. Joshua Broughton led four Trailblazers in double figures with 17 points.
The next night, the Pirates needed overtime to knock off No. 3-ranked Clark, 80-77, out-scoring the Penguins 12-9 in the extra frame.
Deonte Dixon led a balanced PC attack with 17 points; Callaghan had 13 points while Amos, Alex Baham and Darrion Daniels had 12 points apiece. Malik Mayeux had 10 rebounds and Callaghan had a game-high eight assists. Glenn Baral led Clark with 19 points.
Peninsula hits the road once again this week, taking on Lower Columbia in the first round of the Lane Crossover in Eugene, Ore. Other teams set to battle in Eugene include No. 3-ranked Clark, No. 6-ranked Everett, Treasure Valley, Blue Mountain, Umpqua and the host Lane Titans.
Peninsula then gets a winter break before starting conference play Jan. 9 at Edmonds.
