Men’s soccer: Pirates blank Bellevue in regular season final

Peninsula gets bye, hosts second round playoff game on Nov. 9

There’s so much more to play for from here on.

While Peninsula’s men on Oct. 30 celebrated "Sophomore Day" — the team’s final regular season home match — the game served as a mere prelude to the NWAACC playoffs that kick off on Nov. 6.

In their final tuneup for those playoffs, Peninsula made quick work of the visiting Bellevue Bulldogs with a 4-0 victory, getting two goals from Alex Martinez and one each from Ash Apollon and Hugo Marques, and a trio of assists from Erick Urzua.

Martinez, a sophomore forward from Reno, Nev., closed in on Miguel Gonzalez’s career scoring record of 49 goals — the pair Martinez scored put him at 47 for his career and his 26 scores lead the NWAACC.

Apollon, a freshman from Portland, Ore., leads the NWAACC in assists with 15 and is third in scoring, notching his 15th score of the campaign.

Angel Guerra, a sophomore keeper from Wenatchee, earned his NWAACC-leading 10th shutout.

Other sophomores celebrating their final regular season game on the P.C. pitch included Lachlan Bond, Mark Cottrell, Kalei Gallarde, Corbin May and Zachary Newton.

The NWAACC’s top-ranked Pirates finished 12-0-1 in West Division play to for their fifth straight West title, and 18-0-2 overall.

Peninsula host a quarter-final playoff match at 1:15 on Nov. 9 against the winner of the Edmonds (North No. 2 seed) versus Pierce (South No. 3 seed).
