Men’s soccer: Pirates power past Titans

Peninsula clinches playoff berth with victory

It wasn’t a proverbial walk in the park, but Peninsula got what it wanted at home against Tacoma on Saturday: a win and another home playoff game in the NWAACC playoffs.

Alex Martinez and Christian Martinez each had second half scores as the Pirates (9-0-1, 15-0-2) blanked Tacoma 2-0 on Oct. 19.

Alex Martinez opened the scoring when Christian Martinez found him for a score at the 57-minute mark. Christian Martinez made it 2-0 off an Erick Urzua assist about 12 minutes later.

Pirate keeper Angel Guerra made it stick, stopping nine Titan shots for the shutout, his conference-leading eighth of the campaign.

"Tacoma played very well today; they caused us a lot of trouble," Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.

"We finally started to move the ball late in the game and got the result we needed."

Coming up

Peninsula, ranked No. 1 in the conference, takes on division rival Highline on Oct. 23 in Tukwila and play at Olympic on Oct. 26. The Pirates close out the regular season with a home match against Bellevue on Oct. 30.

The NWAACC playoffs begin Nov. 6 with first round games, though the Pirates are in line to receive a bye as a division champ. A round two match would be a home game on Nov. 9.
