Just one event into their first meet, the Wolves extended their season.

Sequim’s 200 medley relay team – Noe Calderon, Parker Steichen, Tommy Moores and Triston Cortani – broke the 2-minute mark with a 1:59.82 finish, qualifying for the West Central District meet by more than 8 seconds.

The swim was one of several highlights in Sequim’s 94-75 loss to North Kitsap that saw less than half of Sequim’s team eligible thanks to missed practices.

"That was a great start," Sequim coach Linda Moats said.

Calderon, a sophomore, earned Sequim’s second district-meet qualifier with a strong, first-place swim in the 200 individual medley (2:21.5). Later in the meet, Calderon won the 100 backstroke event with a 1:05.8 finish, a personal best by 4 seconds and easily a postseason qualifier.

Moores, a junior, earned Sequim’s fourth district berth with a 25.03-second finish in the 50 freestyle, about 1.5 seconds off a state meet-qualifying time.

Moores added a first-place swim and personal best in the 100 free.

Steichen finished second in the 100 butterfly, improving his personal best by more than a second.

Sequim also swept the 100 breaststroke event, thanks to Steichen (first), Duncan Skinner (second) and Cortani (third).

Sequim diver Ezra Perkins, a state qualifier last season, took top honors as Sequim swept that event.

"The newcomers who competed today performed very well," Moats said, noting strong swims from Kyle Trepanier who swam in the 400 free relay, along with 50 free and 200 free individual swims.

Moats noted that newcomer Kiano Stoppani swam well in his 50 free and 100 free events.

"We expect (Kiano) will improve quickly as the season progresses," Moats said.

The Wolves were slated to take on Kingston at home on Dec. 8 – results of them meet were unavailable at press time. The Wolves host Port Angeles on Dec. 10.
