In this setting, a bunch of trolls and other scary characters hardly seem out of place.

Hosted at Troll Haven and Bandy Farms (950 Gardiner Beach Road) and by Friends of Jefferson County Parks and Recreation, the Valley of the Trolls Spooktacular 1-mile and 3-mile run is set for Oct. 24.

“This run is geared to have fun and bring families together for an event,” event promoter Jane Storm said. “We will furnish some glow sticks.”

Registration is at 2 p.m., with a costume contest set for 4 p.m., followed by the race(s) at 5 p.m.

The costume contest awards prizes for top entries in these categories: group, super hero, animal, creativity, spooky, original, glow, Disney, Western theme, storybook and athletic.

“We encourage people to wear glow sticks, head lamps or bring a flash light,” Storm said. “We will furnish some glow sticks.”

Children younger than 10 must be accompanied by an adult or someone over 18 and have a parents signature to participate.

Even though the event is designed to promote fun and togetherness, the race takes on a serious tone in that it’s being dedicated to Titus Fordham, the 4-year-old son of Dr. Tyler Fordham of Peninsula Family Dentistry who was diagnosed this summer with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a genetic disorder.

“We are dedicating the run to him to bring awareness to this disease,” Storm said.

Cost is $10 for the 1-mile run, $20 for the 3-mile run.
