OPRA rowers score medals in Vancouver

Summer camp really paid off for Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association’s junior rowers at the Row for a Cure Regatta in Vancouver on July 29.

Thirteen OPRA rowers came ready to race medaling in every event they entered, winning a total of 22 medals.

In the single scull events, Maggie Van Dyken earned the silver in the women’s 1x with a 4:54 finish, with Veronica Kennedy close behind (5:10) to capture the bronze.

Nathan Mishler raced hard to win a gold in the men’s 1x with a 3:56 finish, several boat lengths ahead of runner-up Finn Peck (4:05).

OPRA’s men’s quad — with Mishler, Zach Gavin, Cyras Mills and Daniel Weaver — finished more than 30 seconds ahead of the field to take first in 3:42.

OPRA’s scrappy women’s 2x team of Ella Ventura and Lica Kennedy raced hard against older and more experienced rowers to capture the bronze, finishing in 4:54.

The association’s mixed 8+ rowers also finished strong (4:34) to earn a bronze medal. The team included Gavin, Mills, Van Dyken, Lica Kennedy, coxswain Veronica Kennedy, Lisa Martin, Jake McGovern,Vince Pavlak and Ella Ventura.

Veronica Kennedy and Calum Swinford teamed up for a silver medal in the mixed 2x, finishing in 4:07.

The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association also was well represented in the Master Rower category, with Sean Halberg winning gold in the men’s masters 1x division, finishing in 3:42.

He will be competing at the Master World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia, later this summer.

The association’s junior rowers were slated to repeat their success Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Green Lake Regatta in Seattle.

Summer rowing camps set

Summer camp programs still are running into August. Program organizers say this is a fun time of year to get out on the water and try something new.

Camps are open to all youths going into sixth grade and higher. Camps are geared for recreational rowers (learn to row) through advanced and competitive rowing.
