Pirates picked for all-star status

Three Peninsula College women and two men were named to their respective Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges All-Conference Teams, as announced Tuesday.

Freshman Gabi Fenumiai and sophomore Xavier Bazile earned North Division First Team honors, while freshman Madison Pilster was named to the Second Team and the All-Defensive Team, and sophomore Daren Hechanova also earned a spot on the All-Defensive Team. Sophomore Alison Knowles was selected to play in the Sophomore All-Star Game.

“Gabi has incredible balance and strength around the rim, with a knack for picking the ball up on rebounds,” coach Alison Crumb said of her first-year post player from Juneau, Alaska. “She is a tough competitor and a force out on the floor.”

Bazile, a sophomore from Tacoma, earned North Division First Team honors for the second straight year.

“Xavier had a tremendous career here at Peninsula,” coach Mitch Freeman said. “For the past two years, he’s been one of the best scoring guards in the NWAACC. He has a bright future at the next level.”

Pilster, like her teammate, had a sensational year as a freshman and earned double honors, as a Second Team All-Conference pick and also All-Defense.

“Madi is very competitive and aggressive,” Crumb said of the Blackfoot, Idaho, freshman.

“It’s hard to match her enthusiasm and grit as a basketball player. Add to that her athleticism and she is tough defensively and offensively.”

Also tough defensively this year was Hechanova, a sophomore transfer from Gardena, Calif.

“Daren made a huge impact on the defensive end all year for us,” Freeman said. “When we needed to stop the opposing team’s best scorer, we went to Daren.”

Another Pirate standout, Alison Knowles, a sophomore from Port Angeles, missed All-Conference recognition, but was selected to play in the Sophomore All-Star game, coming up in March at Pierce College.

“Alison knows the game and is very smart,” Crumb said.

“She is one of the rare pure shooters in the league and a great floor leader.”
