Port Angeles Scandals to host prospect camp

The Port Scandalous league’s roller derby team the Scandals held their first bout of the season at the Sequim Boys and Girls Club on Feb. 22 before a packed crowd. They lost 103-201 to the Bellingham Roller Betties’ team Tough Love but counted it as a success in other terms than score.

“Overall, our team is very proud of ourselves, given the known skill difference. We had a blast,” said Madelyn Doffing, the league’s vice-president.

”The Betties are an A/B skill level team, while we’re a B/C level team … we trailed 20-40 points behind them for most of the first half, (and) we definitely made them work for that win.

“They were a solid team that was hard to knock down, and our blocking walls were definitely put to the test. Many small penalties and many power jams (when one jammer is in the penalty box and the other team has the advantage of being the only team to score points for the duration of the other jammer’s penalty).”

Nobody fouled out on either team, she said.

Doffing said that the Scandals had five pickup players from other teams to supplement the growing team.

“The match itself was a fierce and exciting battle,” said Angelina Morales, social media and marketing manager for the league. “While the Port Scandalous Scandals fought hard and gave it our all, the true victory was in the camaraderie, sportsmanship and love for the game.”

League members spoke of the packed house – they sold out and had to close the doors – as a sign of the team’s success as they continue to rise from a Covid-era dip in team members and lack of practice times. Their fans did not forget them.

“We had close to 200 fans in the audience, if not more,” Doffing said.

The community support, said Morales, is “proof that the roller derby community is stronger than ever. It’s been a journey full of hard work, volunteer hours, and plenty of bruises, and it means the world to us to see so many fans back in the stands.

“If this bout inspired you and you’re saying ‘I want to do that,’ the Port Scandalous team is putting on prospect camp starting April 13th,” she said.

The camp is five sessions and skaters of all skills are welcome. For more information or to register, go to https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/6565171.
