Here are some of the results from last week’s prep sports for Sequim High School varsity sports.
Girls Soccer
North Kitsap 3, Sequim 2
Sequim’s second-half equalizer came off the scoreboard and the Wolves fell 3-2 on the road in a girls soccer showdown with first-place North Kitsap on Oct. 17.
“We had an opportunity on a corner kick,” coach Ken Garling said. “Raimey [Brewer] put it in, there was a scrum and Taryn Johnson found the back of the net. Unfortunately, the goal was called off due to interference with the goalkeeper. It was a deflating moment for the girls. We didn’t think it was a good call at the time and when I watch the replay … my goodness.”
Second-place Sequim opened the match exactly as the Wolves wanted with Jenny Gomez scoring, assisted by Libby Turella.
“We went down with the mindset that we knew we could compete with NK,” Garling said. “We wanted to get a goal out of the gate and set the tone and we did in the third or fourth minute. Jenny Gomez got a nice feed in from our center back Libby Turella. Libby saw her and gave her a nice ball over the top and Jenny turned on it quickly and fired it with her right foot.”
The Vikings, then ranked No. 5 in the Class 2A RPI, soon answered the Sequim score with a pair of their own.
“NK is a good team and you have to really stay on your guard,” Garling said. “They came down about the 11th minute and we gave up a corner and we left an NK player unmarked in box, and when you do that, they will find the back of the net.”
Vikings striker Evelyn Beers notched the first of her two goals in the 26th minute to go up 2-1 on the Wolves at half.
Beers found the net quickly after Sequim’s second goal was disallowed for a 3-1 North Kitsap lead in the 54th minute.
“Our girls continued to fight,” Garling said. “Gomez had a really good assist up to Taryn, a square pass, and she found a little window and snuck the ball into the keeper’s right in the 70th minute.”
Sequim tried its best to notch the score late.
“We pressed and were going for it, we moved a defender up and I think it was one of those games where if we had four or five more minutes we would have tied it up,” Garling said.
Bainbridge 2, Sequim 1
Some tough calls reversed a Sequim goal and allowed the Spartans to tie the game before winning late.
The Wolves led 1-0 at halftime after freshman Olive Bridge let loose with a left-footed shot from 25 yards out in the 20th minute that beat the goalkeeper to the right.
“We had an opportunity to go up 2-0, Brewer sent in a corner kick that Katie Morris put in the back of the net, but it was called off for obstruction of the goalkeeper,” Sequim coach Ken Garling said.
Bainbridge then capitalized after a Spartans player bumped into Wolves goalkeeper Kalli Grove, kneeing her in the face and causing her to drop the ball, which was promptly put in net.
Bainbridge added the winning goal in the final minute.
Sequim (9-3-0) was scheduled to host Bremerton on Oct. 24. They close out the the regular season on Oct. 26 at Kingston with West Central District tournament gamesscheduled for Oct. 31-Nov. 4 at various locations.

North Kitsap 3, Sequim 0
The Wolves were slow to acclimate in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-17) loss to the first-place Vikings on Oct. 17.
“North came out really strong the first game and we were like, ‘What?’,” coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said. “We regrouped in the second game and played better, but our offense kind of disappeared in that third game. And we also didn’t have a ton of digs in that game.”
Jolene Vaara led the Wolves at the net with 12 kills, five stuff blocks and five digs. She also served 4-for-5 with two perfect passes.
Sydney Clark added 15 assists, five digs and was 8-for-9 on serves with an ace.
Arianna Stovall added four kills and four stuff blocks while still recovering from an ankle injury.
Brianna Palenik added three kills, four digs and two aces on 9-for-10 serving.
Tiffany Lam also had five digs and four perfect passes.
Bainbridge 3, Sequim 0
The Wolves were swept 25-19, 25-23 and 25-17 on Oct. 19 by Bainbridge.
“Bainbridge was serving fairly well, they had 16 aces, and we weren’t passing well,” Webber Heilman said.
Clark served 14 for 14 with a seven-point run in the second game, 11 assists, two blocks and four digs.
Vaara led the team with nine kills. She served 7 for 8 with an ace, five blocks and five digs.

Charlie Grider had a great game for Sequim with a 44-yard touchdown catch on a ball he literally ripped out of a North Kitsap defender’s arms. He also caught a pass for a two-point conversion.
Zeke Schmadeke added a 37-yard catch and a great 16-yard catch in triple coverage that helped set up a 25-yard Jack Henninger field goal. He also had a pair of long kick returns.
