Prep sports roundup: Soccer, tennis sweep last week’s match-ups

Here’s a recap of Sequim’s prep sports from last week with more scores and pictures at sequimgazette.com.

Soccer

Sequim’s boys soccer squad (5-4, 5-4) went 2-0 last week with a win on the road and at home.

In Kingston on April 15, the Wolves overcame a missing piece, controlled the match and received a boost from a player returning from injury in a road win over the Bucs.

Sequim received goals from Josh Alcaraz assisted by Colin Feik in the 28th minute and a second goal from Nico Musso for a 2-1 halftime lead.

The Wolves kept Kingston at bay until an insurance goal in the final 10 minutes from Preston Kurtze.

“He decided to take on a few players and busted through the back line to finally find the net,” Wolves coach Dave Breckenridge said. “This was a big moment for him and well deserved. He has been putting in the work and physical therapy after his surgery last season and this was exactly the motivation he needed. We are all hoping he will stay healthy and finally finish a full season in his senior year.”

Breckenridge said goalkeeper Nolan Valenzuela put in good work in net for the Wolves.

On Friday, April 18, Sequim beat Bremerton 3-1 to remain in fourth place in the Olympic League.

They were set to travel to North Mason on Tuesday, April 22, and host Bainbridge on April 25.

Tennis

The Wolves’ girls tennis team swept four match-ups last week including three matches on the road.

Sequim won 5-2 at Olympic on April 14, 7-0 at Bremerton on April 15, 5-2 at North Mason on April 16, and 7-0 at home against Kingston on April 17.

Head coach Andrea Dietzman said Sequim has had a lot of change in their No. 1 singles position this year as the girls challenge each other to gain the top position.

Tiffany Lam, Amara Gonzalez and Calleigh Thompson have all taken turns with the players currently set as No. 1-3 singles in that order.

For doubles, Sydney Thomas-Harris, Kendall Day, Kristina Prorok and Sasha Yada are the top teams and look to return to compete at the league meet, Dietzman said.

Sequim is set to host North Mason on April 22 and North Kitsap on April 23. They’ll travel to Bainbridge on April 24.

Track and Field

Sequim’s girls had success in all but one of the jumping events on their way to an Olympic League track and field meet victory at home on April 17.

The Wolves defeated Bremerton 77-58 in the girls’ meet with Clallam Bay and Neah Bay athletes also participating.

Defending state high jump champion Clare Turella posted her best leap of the early season, 5 feet, to win that event. Teammate Ahrya Klinger took the pole vault (7-6) and freshman Ruby Moxley-Horgan was a winner in the long jump at 14-8 1/2.

Senior Sean Southard won two field events, setting a personal record in the shot put (42-8) and taking the javelin (148-3). Southard also was a member of the Wolves’ winning 4×100 relay squad along with Reid Randall, Adrian Osborne and Andrew Keeler (46.83).

Osborne, Westley French, Jonathan Tipton and Gavin Tupper won the 4×400 relay for Sequim.

At the Li’l Norway meet in Poulsbo on April 19, Sequim’s Dawn Hulstedt took first in the 800-meter run and Reid Randall took fourth in the pole vault with a 10-6 jump.

Golf

The Lady Wolves’ collective strength lifted them to a 204-216 win over North Mason at Lakeland Village Golf Course on April 15. Sara German and Kendra Dodson each posted nine-hole rounds of 50, while Raimey Brewer shot a 51 and Gabriella Hood added a 53.

On April 24, Sequim and Bainbridge earned a rare tie at The Cedars at Dungeness with each side totaling 188 strokes in the nine-hole match.

Brewer led the Wolves with a round of 7-over-par 43 to finish second individually.

Bainbridge senior Grace Charintranont, the reigning Olympic League champion, shot even-par 36 to earn match medalist.

German and Kaiya Robinson each posted scores of 48 to tie for fourth, while Dodson added a 49.

For the boys on April 22, Sequim lost 175-181 to North Mason but Adrian Aragon continued his strong play with a 1-over-par 37 to earn match medalist honors. Joey Kang added a 43 and Cody Dunscomb shot a score of 45 for the Wolves. Levi Breithaupt had a round of 56 and Florentino Martinez carded a 57. At The Cedars, the Wolves lost 148-178 to Bainbridge.
