Sequim’s top tennis players saw similar results while facing some of the best in the division at the 2A state championships last week in Seattle.
Both of the Wolves’ doubles teams went 1-2 on May 26 in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Justin Porter and Stephen Prorok opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Nick Stottlemyre and Ryan Warren of Tumwater. However, they lost in the next round 6-2, 6-0 to third-place finishers Bryan and Ethan Le of Liberty. In the consolation bracket, Porter and Prorok lost to fourth-place finishers Finn Fosberg and Drew Sagmoen of Highline 6-0, 6-0.
Sequim’s girls doubles team of Hannah D’Amico and Jessica Dietzman had a tough opener with eventual 2A state champions Alice Hiebert and Sophia Lawrence of Bellingham. They lost 6,0, 6-1, but did pickup a 6-4, 6-1 win over Olympic’s Brooklyn Haro and Sydney Troy. D’Amico and Dietzman finished the tournament in a close match-up losing 7-5, 6-2 to eighth-place finishers Tanaya Anderson and Katie Walker of Othello.
Both of Sequim’s doubles teams finished fourth at the West Central Districts touranments, the girls in May and the boys in October of last year, to earn state berths.
D’Amico, Porter and Prorok are all seniors and the boys team have been doubles partners for three years. It was all of the players’ first trip to the state tournament.
